David Bustos Quintet + Dreamscapes

There is a wealth of talented young composers and improvisers emerging from Birmingham all the time and this gig is an exciting opportunity to hear two young bands that seem destined to do great things.

Guitarist Julien Durand leads the sextet DREAMSCAPES with the increasingly sought-after vocalist Lucy-Anne Daniels and the fantastic saxophonist George Garford completing the front line. Driving the sound from the rhythm section are keys player Cenk Esen, bassist John Jones, and drummer Jack Robson. Hot off the back of a stellar performance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and the release of a self-titled EP, this is a wonderful time to catch this ensemble.

Durand will return in the second set under the leadership of composer and saxophonist David Bustos. Described by Tony Dudley-Evans as “atmospheric and spiritual”, Bustos’ music is influenced by the spirit of jazz greats such as Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, as well as the intimacy of Björk and Sam Gendel. Bustos and Durand will be joined by pianist Nick Manz, bassist Josh Vidaveloo, and drummer Matt Holmes, three young lions who are sure to deliver a punchy performance.
