Saadet Türköz + BARK!

We are hugely excited to welcome Saadet Türköz for a special collaboration at Pan-Pan.

Saadet’s music is strongly influenced by the rich oral and musical traditions handed down by her family, encompassing stories of the highlands of Central Asia, her family’s journey to Turkey, and the elder people of the Kasakh community.

Saadet says, “I’ve always been impressed by kazakh and turkish music. I’m deeply moved by its humanity, its archaic power and its melancholy.”

After moving to Zurich and discovering its free jazz and improvised music scenes, Saadet began blending traditional Kazakh and Turkish songs with improvisations. In her project 'Songdreaming' she explores new musical landscapes and invites instrumentalists to partner with her and enter into a musical dialogue. Based on her lyrics and thoughts they improvise on songs from Saadet's childhood in the Kazakh community of Istanbul.

For this performance, Saadet will be joined by Bruce Coates (saxophones), Trevor Lines (bass) and Mark Sanders (drums).

Also performing as the other half of this double bill is BARK! - the longstanding British improvised music group formed by Rex Casswell and Phillip Marks in Manchester in 1991. After several earlier line-ups, Paul Obermayer joined to form the current trio of electric guitar, percussion and electronics in 1999. BARK! has performed in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia, and has released many albums.

Their music builds on several key influences – free jazz, punk, Modernism, pop/rock – but especially the pioneering free improvisation of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and AMM. It ranges from detailed slow-moving textures, through BARK!’s trademark interlocking grooves, to the most frenzied kinetic noise. Solos are rare, the collective gestures and textures scraping together to explore the intersections of acoustic and electronic sound.

This concert will last approximately 2 hours.
